A Message from the Principal

Principal’s Weekly Message

March 26, 2021

Dear PS 64 Families,

The opt-in window to return to in-person learning opened on Wednesday, March 24, and will close on Wednesday, April 7. Please be reminded that we do not offer blended learning. All in-person students come to school 5-days a week. Although it says you’re signing up for blended learning, for our school we follow a 5-day a week in-person model. Depending on the number of families who want to return, we may need to open another class or two to maintain 3 feet of physical distance. We will know more when the window closes and we can take a look at the numbers. If you’d like to return to in-person learning, use this link to complete the learning preference survey.

Our kindergarten numbers for the 2021-22 school year are alarmingly low, 14 offers to be exact. We alerted the superintendent’s office of this concern as something does not seem right, and they have requested the office of enrollment to investigate further. We’re also hearing stories of families who ranked our school as their first choice but did not receive an offer according to our records. Families have yet to be notified, but we want you to know this. If you or anyone you know want to enroll in our school for any grade, but especially kindergarten, please call the main office so we may begin the process. Additionally, we are pleased to open a 3-K program in the fall. You may use this link to apply.

All in-person students will be taking the NYS ELA and mathematics exam in the spring. Remote families have the option of coming in to take the exam if they choose. Details to follow.

New York State has given updated guidance to allow school-based dental programs to resume, which means our program with NYU may begin services in the spring. All students will have an opportunity to receive a cleaning and preventative dental care on site. Details to follow.

Many thanks to our PTA for delivering treats in the spirit of the season to all in-person students on Thursday.

There is no school next week. Please see the attached flyer for virtual holiday camp with our CBO Educational Alliance, as well as a travel advisory letter from our Chancellor. We return on Monday, April 5. Until then, we wish you a very happy and peaceful spring recess. Happy

Passover. Happy Holi. Happy Easter. Let us remember the messages of these traditions to come together and make all things new again.
