Principal’s Weekly Message

January 15, 2021

Dear PS 64 Families,

I’m so pleased to report that the majority of our teaching staff has received the first dose of the COVID vaccine (my appointment is next Tuesday) and you can see pictures posted on Instagram and www.ps64m.org.  This is a major step towards defeating the pandemic and allowing us to be together again as a whole school.  We applaud our teachers (and office staff) for taking steps to protect themselves and our community by getting the vaccine so quickly.

As a reminder the COVID vaccine has nothing to do with the DOE random testing program.  In fact, children under 16 are not even permitted to receive the vaccine at this time.  We will continue to randomly test on a weekly basis.  The children are now used to it and, believe it or not, look forward to it.

The deadline to apply for kindergarten for the 21-22 school is Tuesday, January 19.  If you are currently a Pre-K family and would like to return next year for kindergarten, please apply online at https://www.myschools.nyc/en/.  If you know of anyone shopping around for next year in kindergarten or any of the grades, please recommend our school.  You are our biggest advocates and promoters of the work we do.

The middle school application is now available. This means that families who have created a MySchools account in the parent portal may explore their personalized MS application and submit choices.  The application deadline is Tuesday, February 9.  The Office of Student Enrollment will be hosting borough admissions events for families starting next week. These events include an admissions presentation, and a question and answer session. Families may register here.  In addition to this, our very own Ms. Desroches will host a middle schools workshop next week on Thursday, January 21, at 3pm.  You will receive a zoom link invitation via email and it will be posted on Google classroom.

The following message is from our afterschool director and director of community schools:

Johnale and Alease from Educational Alliance would like to remind parents that they have virtual afterschool activities every school day from 2:00pm to 3:00pm and again at 3:30pm to 4:30pm.  Some activities include Yoga, STEM, Dance, Arts Explorations, and Power Hour where students can receive help with their assignments. Below is a step-by-step guide to find the virtual afterschool schedule and links on your child's Google Classroom. Next week we will start holding a weekly raffle for participants that log into our activities. Each activity a child attends acts as an entry into the raffle. Next week's prize will be a $20 Amazon gift card! Winners will be announced on the following Monday. If you have any questions you can reach out to Johnale or Alease via email at atabb@edalliance.org  or jemery@edalliance.org, or by phone at (212) 979-2387.

You are reminded that there is no school on Monday, January 18, in observance of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Now more than ever must we embrace his message of love of neighbor, peace, justice, non-violent opposition to injustice, and equality for all regardless of that which makes us different.  This is not a new concept.  In fact, it’s been our mandate since the beginning of time.  So, let us continue our daily struggle to live according to what is right and just.

Peace,

Marlon L. Hosang
