A Message from the Principal

Principal's Weekly Message

January 22, 2021

Dear PS 64 Families,

It’s a new day in our country and together we rejoice in the peaceful transfer of power which is a hallmark of our democracy.  And, with all new days, we seize the opportunity to make all things new again.  Our teachers and staff have been quick in getting the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and proudly share this with us on social media.  I joined them this week and posted a video for all to see.  This is a giant first step in getting us back together again in the fall.  We encourage you to follow our lead and get vaccinated when it’s your turn.

The middle school application is now available.  Families who have created a MySchools account in the parent portal may explore their personalized MS application and submit choices.  The application deadline is Tuesday, February 9. The parent portal will close at that time. Ms. Desroches hosted our first family informational workshop yesterday on Zoom.  If you were unable to attend, there will be another one next Tuesday, January 26, at 1:00pm.  Details to follow.  The Office of Student Enrollment has begun to host borough admissions events for families. These events include an admissions presentation, and a question and answer session. Families may register here.  Also, the kindergarten admissions application closes today.  Invite all your friends and family with children of kindergarten age to apply to our great school.  Here’s the link.  https://www.myschools.nyc/en/

Respect for All Week is February 5 through February 11.  As is our custom, we will create special lessons and activities to highlight our core values of respect, love, peace, and justice.

Ryan Health is now offering COVID-19 testing by appointment at their main centers for SBHC patients. We are excited to share this opportunity for convenient and safe testing with families at PS64.  I have attached a letter for parents explaining how they can schedule appointments for testing. I have also attached the new fillable SBHC consent form. This is a new, easy-to-use version of the consent form that can be completed digitally.  We are hopeful that this form will make it easier for parents to enroll their children at our SBHC (compared to paper forms we have used exclusively in the past).  We invite all to take advantage of this opportunity for free and high-quality medical service.

The PTA will meet next week Thursday, January 28, at 9:00am.  Immediately following the meeting we will have our first family CookShop event.  We hope you can join us.  Please see the attached flyer for details.

That’s all for now.  Take comfort in knowing that the days are getting longer.  Light defeats darkness, so let our light shine for all to see as we continue our struggle to live according to what is right and just.
